Which worm is this, how to get rid of it?

Hi,

Today I found this worm (black and yellow)

on my grape plant's leave. Can someone please tell me what worm is this? Is it safe and if not how I can get rid of it organically?

I have a lawn containing misc. fruit trees and also a separate area for some vegetables (just a few weeks old), so I m worried about it.

thanks
Coure.

Hello Coure and welcome to the forum. The little creature on your grape leaf is not a worm but a caterpillar. Its difficult to identify which species it is the larva of but it is easy enough for you to just pick it off and dispose of it.

As @Ladybird4 says, it's a caterpillar. Probably the best way to deal with them organically is to go round checking the plants every day (or evening) and picking them off. There is also a biological control mentioned in this article

One caterpillar may not be a problem, but when he invites all his mates round for a party it can be a different matter.

It seems a but early here for caterpillars, sort of looks like the common cabbage white.

If you do decide to pick the caterpillar off your plant, make sure that you wear gardening gloves when you do it. Those little hairs on his body will make you itch and give you a rash. He doesn't want to be picked off or eaten by a bird, so he's defending himself (the black and yellow colours are also another warning signal to "predators" - which as far as he is concerned is what we are).

Gardening is great so you have ots to look forward to and learn - including getting on with wildlife.
