Daphne fragrantissima

My 5 year old Daphne has just died, for no reason I can determine.
except I have had 2 others die in this bed. It is next to a conifer, could the soil be too acid? I have also dug a hellebore out from under it this winter? Would root disturbance of this minor type cause it’s demise?

Yes, daphne's hate root disturbance.  That and the fact that conifers suck up all nutrients and water in their general root area will have done it in, I strongly suspect.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

I started my garden last year and made a few mistakes with the planting. I moved the lovely daphne that was doing very well. I shouldn't have. It died as well. in addition to the conifer sucking up all the water and goodness, perhaps it was giving too much shade as well?
  • it’s difficult to know, it had been very happy for 5 years, so I’m inclined to think it was digging up the hellebores which had self seeded all around its stem! Anyway the stem is still green though all the leaves and buds have gone, so I’m going to give it time, and see what happens
