I'd be tempted to plant some nice shrubs along the fence line, but giving them room to fill out. Choisya seem to work well in different areas of my garden. Then some of the smaller Sorbus trees in the lawns each side.

We have a small flowering cherry called The Bride which isn't too tall in a North facing spot.

Hi, we've got a front garden with 2 bay windows and we get quite a lot of footfall, so i'm looking to plant some shrubs / trees that will stop people looking in our windows when the pass by. Can anyone recommend a tree / shrub that wont grow too tall (maybe 4 / 5 foot max) that doesn't have an invasive root system.

4/5 foot max is a fairly limited full grown size so rules out a lot of nice shrubs and most trees but two types that I like that stay within that limit would be some varieties of Hypericum and Potentilla. Other nice options that might be too small but might work would be some of the hebes and pittosporum tom thumb.
