Infestation

I've got an infestation of something and don't know what it is but I'm losing plants, any ideas?

Green fly, looks like greenfly (aphids) rub them off with your fingers.

  • I did that and they've returned. Also washed the leaves and sprayed with SB Invigorator but still found some this morning. It's getting really annoying! I'm considering whether or not to re-pot them.

Unfortunately aphids are an ongoing thing. You have to keep watch all the time.
they're prolific breeders, they give birth to live young and they’re up and chewing straight away.

As Lyn says just wipe them off.
You'll probably need to do it a few times to break the cycle (eggs already laid will hatch) and they'll be gone.
The plants seem to be in quite big pots already, so I wouldn't re-pot yet.

can you get a clearer picture of them?  They’re a bit blurred so I’m only guessing aphid.

  • I've mucked up this year and done too many things wrong, one of which is that some seedlings are in too big a pot! Apparently weak washing up liquid/water is a solution so going to try that.
  • Not sure if these are any better. Now that you've said greenfly I did see one the other week so I think you are right.

Definitely greenfly. Only thing to do it keep  picking them off or spray with washing up liquid or melt some hand soap and mix with water  it’s more gentle.
They are in too big a pots, but you already know that,  we all have to learn. 🙂

Agreed on aphids, my Aquilegias have them at the moment! @alison652 we are all learning all the time, don’t be so hard on yourself

I haven’t tried it but I’ve bought some worm castings this spring to see if they help protect against aphids.
