Leaf radish

EustaceEustace Posts: 2,290
I had a foil packet of leaf radish seeds which I sowed in a seed tray about a fortnight ago and they've started germinating. As this is my first time, I wasn't sure as to the seed density to sow. You can see from the photo that the sprouts are a bit sparse. Do I allow them to grow bigger or harvest as microgreens?

I have never heard of leaf radish and google isn't helping me, however the seedlings look like some form of mix, possibly a mustard mix? if so you can either wait a few days and have a sprinkling of micro greens or if you wait a couple of weeks you can get a side salad from that. I've not had any success with planting those mixes out in spring they always bolt( flower) on me.

Thanks @Skandi. I asked my friend who shared these packets with me sometime back as to where she bought it from and was given the following link: https://www.kingsseeds.com/Products/Vegetable-Seeds/Baby-Leaf/Radish-Red-Rioja

    So, it is micro-salad

Radish is a brassica so the leaves of all radishes are edible. When picked young, before root swell, they serve as micro salad. As the plant matures, the leaves get a bit tougher and are better cooked but can still be eaten raw.

It is very disheartening to see that most people in this country are incredibly wasteful when it comes to radishes - they eat only the root and throw the rest away!

The same is true for kohlrabi leaves, broccoli leaves and stalks and many other vegetables.

I agree about wasting other parts of veg.  I watched a friend 'juice' some veg.  They took some broccoli and proceeded to cut it, putting the head into the machine and chucked the stalk (at least half the mass of it) in the bin.  I felt I had to point out that it was going into a juicer to feed the body, not onto a fancy restaurant plate to feed the eyes!
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
