Established Acer in sun

Hi,

When we moved into this house we inherited an established Acer in the front garden (about 8 feet tall). It got morning sun but was relatively sheltered from the midday sun by trees in the neighbours garden. He's now pulled down all the trees leaving the Acer exposed. He's already put a fence post through the roots so I am not sure it will survive but if it does, how do I ensure it doesn't suffer from leaf scorch? I'm not sure moving such a tree is an option.

Thanks!

Hi and welcome to the forum
Some varieties are fine in the sun.
I have a Palmatum Disectum that's been in the sun for over 30 years and it is fine.

I had an acer sango kaku in full sun in my last garden in Belgium and an atropurpureum that was in full sun between the equinoxes all the time it was in leaf.   Wind was more of a problem than sun.

If you can keep yours watered thru dry spells, even when it's not hot, the foliage should be fine.  Maybe hoe gently around the trunk and roots then add some slow release fertiliser for leafy plants and give it a good long drink to helps it repair any damage to its roots from the fence post and then a mulch of well-rotted manure or compost to help retain the moisture.

  • Thanks a lot for the photos and advice, its great to see other Acer's doing well in the sun. I've added some manure over winter as mulch I will also put in some slow release fertiliser. I'll definitely keep an eye on the watering as well. I don't know the variety but it has red palmate leaves (which could be many many varieties of course).
I'll post back later in the year to update on my progress. Thank you!
