Any ideas would be grateful. Was thinking possibly rhododendrons and small conifers?

Hello. Assume it is shaded? How about Skimmia or Fatsia? Evergreen ferns? Sarcococca?

Yes it doesn’t get much sun at all. Thanks very much for your suggestions - I’ve got something to go on now.

The first 3 of the plants in Jan's list require acid soil.

Ferns are always great plants to have and astrantias will keep on flowering when you dead head them so their seasons is long and they have such delicate flowers.
Sarrcococa as suggested by @Pianoplayer is a fabulous plant. It is evergreen and the flowers in the winter are beautifully fragrant. They can be pruned back with no problems.

Take a look at Osmanthus x Burkwoodii or Delavayi which has a more lax sprawling habit which may be more suitable on a slope.

Did you know that rhododendrons and azaleas are toxic to bees!?

I only found that out by accident the other day. So i’d advise against them!
