Instead of a lawn?

My neighbours extension has plunged my small lawn into shade and it's most unhappy. Any ideas for grass replacement? I already have a fern bed due to their high fences and I have quite a lot of hard landscaping. I need something tough and easy to manage since I'm in my 70's. I hate artificial grass. Help please! You can get grass seed for shade but obviously you would have to remove whats there or overseed.
I too am getting to my 70s don't like artificial grass but hate mowing even more and need the energy for actual gardening so have been very pleased with my artificial grass.

Thank you for your speedy comments. Unfortunately this is a totally sunless area now so I'm not sure any grass would succeed - it's struggled for the last 12 months but is obviously giving up now.

Just looked a shade seed but they do need some sun.
Can you post a photo using the icon that looks like a mountain as that will help with suggestions.

You could possibly encourage moss. Not sure how much work this would be to get there from your current grass situation- my ‘lawn’ is about 75% moss without my intervention! Wish it would go to fully moss as then I wouldn’t need to mow it at all.

I was wondering if clover would be OK, it's a small area but beloved by my terrier? At the moment it's the only thing that looks healthy in my ex-lawn

Why not sounds a good idea who says green has to be grass?

I think clover would be great and if you can leave it long enough to flower it'll be great for pollinators too.   Either way, it won't need cutting as often as grass and it will be green.

The only potential problem is if your dog is stupid like mine and tries to catch bees! He hasn't managed it yet, thank goodness, as it it a moot point if we could get him to the vet fast enough to save him if he were asphyxiated by a sting.

Yes, bees are a problem. She's a nightmare with anything that moves. Oh well, back to the drawing board.
