Cherry tree

Hi everyone, we moved into our house last May and the previous owner left a cherry tree in a pot. I am just learning all about gardening and so did nothing to it last year. This year the tree only seems to have buds on the very ends of branches, should it be like this or do I prune it, I would like it to be more bushy if possible, thanks in advance for any help.

  • Cherry are usually better not pruned outside of summer months as there is a common disease called silver leaf that it can get infected with if pruned in the more damp months of the year. Trees will normally focus their growth higher up to compete with other plants for light by growing taller than the competition.

Don't prune it now as trees in this family can get Silver Leaf disease, which is fatal.  You would also be removing the buds which may well be about to flower.  The best time to prune cherries is in summer, so wait until mid-June but delay further if the weather is cold and wet.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
