Pulmonaria!

LoxleyLoxley Posts: 5,698
Does anyone grow Pulmonaria in full sun, but where they will be covered over and shaded out by larger perennials later in the year? Rather than planting it in shade I'm thinking of using it to provide spring interest where I have a group of Rudbeckia lacianata and asters.

Mine seeds and  grows everywhere and anywhere. It's not one of the fancy jobs, though. The bog standard blue one. Once the leaves get manky or mildewed, I pull them off. They come back the next spring. Once you have loads of self- seeders , you can select the ones with nicely marked leaves and dispose of the boring ones.

I have got one called 'Opal' which is on the shady side of the garden. Like yours it got a bit mildewy but I cut it back and it actually regrew. The new one I've got is 'Blue Ensign'. It will end up deep within other perennials as the summer goes on, so the mildew thing isn't too much of an issue as it won't be seen. I've heard a rumour that 'Blue Ensign' actually dies down in the summer, but will have to see.

I have Blue Ensign and it disappears completely in summer.

So have l, and it's in full sun. As @Loxley says it disappears in Summer.

    This sounds ideal.

My garden is arguably overstuffed as it is, so the idea of plants that disappear and make way for others appeals to me!

I’ve got the big standard blue turning to pink one and the Red one,  both in sun and shade, both fine and spread everywhere.

  • I grow Pulmonaria 'Diana Clare which has striking silver foliage. Its position would count as full sun but there is some shading later in the season from Euphorbia palustris, white phlox and asters.

  • The only thing they really seem not to like (to the point of gradually wasting away) is not enough organic matter in the soil.
