Advice for store bought root cuttings?

I got some plants roots gaillardia and echinacea but they didn't grow at all and I think just rotted cause when I took them out of the pots to check them there weren't any white roots or anything
I had planted them vertically in the pots was that my mistake? Anyone with info on how to get these to grow in the future would be awesome
I think my current ones are a lost cause

Not yet tried it myself, but it was on Gardener's World a couple of weeks back. The cuttings do go in vertically, but you need to have the root the right way up. Could yours have been upsidedown?
