Seedlings turning brown

Hi. I recently planted my free GW echinacea seeds and they came on fine initially, but have now gone a shade of brown. Instructions were to ‘keep moist’ but my guess is I’ve overwatered? The compost is damp but I’ve actually not watered them for a while. They did get a soak a couple of weeks back. They’ve been in a coldframe. Could they be rescued... or do I be ruthless and start again?

Good morning!   @paddym  If it were me, I would just leave them and hope for the best and also perhaps sow a fresh lot.
A good hoeing is worth two waterings.

I'm guessing they haven't had enough heat, and quite possibly overwatered .
l think a cold frame isn't warm enough for them at this time of year. It looks like time to start again  :)
Do you have a kitchen windowsill or somewhere indoors where you can grow them on and give them light and warmth? Also with regards to watering, wait until the compost feels dry and l would water from below if you can. When the compost starts to glisten with moisture, take them out. Seedlings are very prone to overwatering and can rot easily if you're not careful. It's a fine balancing act.

Thanks for your answers! I think we did overwater and the cold weather means they’ve sat in soggy compost too long. Shame but we have more seeds! Will try again and hope for better luck

The compost looks quite woody. Is it a specific seed compost? I have tried to germinate seeds in some of the lumpier/woody composts and the results can be disappointing.

Good point. Yes it was a seed compost, but once watered in I noticed how a lot of the finer matter ‘sank’ leaving the surface to the woodier bits. I’ve now rescued 3 seedlings but the rest have been binned. The survivors are staying indoors until we’ll established 😆
