Portuguese laurel hedge on stalks

Hello new here , i moved in to a new house that has a hedge, the laurel was on a stalk and leggy so i pruned it last year , i cut the main stem down and trimmed around it , now someone said to me it won’t grow much higher because i cut the main stem off. i was hoping for it to be about 5/6 ft high and it isn’t very bushy either.
I did feed it last year and it seems to be sprouting around the base on some but what can i do this year to help it , it has lots of buds on at present, thanks
