Magpies

  • No photos and in a previous garden ... it was just an offcut of coir matting on the top rail of a fence with a strand of wire wrapped around it. Tying ing it on with string would’ve worked just as well.
    😊

Ahh that's a shame, my imagination will have to do! Thank you :)

    I don't I'm afraid.
    Thanks anyway!

These are half baskets that are actually hanging on a wall filled with Hedera Helix... which was spilling over and mostly covering the coco underneath... hasn't stopped them though!  :/ I'm going to try and look into some sort of liner. I have a roll of weed sheet in the shed that we inherited with the house a few years back. Generally I don't like the stuff but I am wondering if I could use that.

I discover that magpies and rooks etc love to eat slugs - so, suddenly they are welcome in my garden.

An old wool sweater?  You could line that with a compost bag or your weed membrane.  If you don't have one, they are often available at the charity shop.. or you can ask on social media.  Maybe you'll end up with something quite colorful.

I wish they would eat the voles in mine!  They really love my suet feeder, which you might try if you want to attract more.  I hung it next to some sturdy branches for them to eat from, as they can't land or hang on it itself.

I’ve used black plastic bin liners in the past, worked fine in hanging baskets.

    2 for joy!
I don’t like magpies, I know they have to eat as well but they take fledglings out of other nests and rip them apart,  I really don’t like them.  2 in the air fighting over a baby bird and the parents on the ground squawking  at them.😢
They get shooed off here now.

I'm watching a magpie's nest being blown about in the gale we've got here. Waiting for the eggs to roll out the entrance!

We've been getting an increasing number of visits from magpies recently. Just witnessed the longest feed any bird has ever had in our garden. Mr Maggie was on the back lawn for ages - there can't be any grubs or slugs left within a couple of inches of the surface ;)
