Photinia...?

Hello!
A recent house move means I now have my first garden to tend... Lots to be done and vast amounts for a thicko like me to learn...
Can anyone help identify the shrub/tree pictured? It's about 12ft tall, top heavy with a solid trunk. Should I be pruning it? Is there a way to encourage it fill the 4ft gap beneath it, or something I can plant at the base?
All advice is greatly received! Thank you!

    Think you are right.
    They can take hard pruning.
If it was mine I would clear all the lower branches and try and shape it better.
With the bottom clear you will be able to get other plants to grow.

Plenty of online advice on how and when to prune.
