two trees at a school ID

I am helping to build a planting area at our local primary school. The IDs are a long shot as there is very little to go on. Will be probably just toss these two out, but it would be good to know what they are first. The second might be self-seeded.
For the record, as others had supposed, the answer to pics loading sideways, is to shrink the file size. Just worked for me.
So the question I'm asking is: what might these two trees be. Just an ID. Thanks

2. Possibly might be a Cornus ???

Those are my best guesses ... think the first one may be dead ... if the leaves shrivelled like that rather than changing colour and falling in autumn it looks like lack of water.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
The lower one... can you wait a week or two? Once the leaves have expanded it might be more obvious.
