Photinia Robusta Compacta - are they dead?

I've had 6 of these plants in planters for just under a year, in a sun exposed and windy balcony.  Five of the six plants have been looking like this with very crisp dead looking leaves (photos below) since around August - I wasn't sure if they were dead or just dormant, and the last plant that still has some green leaves is also starting to get dry, dark red leaves.  Do you think they are they dead, or can they be revived?

I've tried prunning them since taking these photos but the stems look completely woody when I cut the ones with the dead leaves, whereas when I cut the one that looks slightly heavier, there is some green inside the stem.

Would love your advice - I was thinking about replacing them, but don't want to if there is still a shot.

Although they might have compacta in their name they still make largish shrubs/trees so they aren't going to survive in your planters which also look dry.
You could keep the one that you think might be alive and plant it by itself, cut it back by half and see what happens. Bin the rest.
