Unknown prolific plant rampaging through the garden.... please help!

Hello everyone,
I have a plant that seems to be taking over my entire garden, with no signs of getting tired.  However many I uproot, they keep coming.  It smells very much like garlic, or maybe onion/chive. I wouldn’t mind, but they are growing through the grass, into all of the beds and whilst they smell quite nice, they are uncontrollable!
Does anybody have any advice for a novice gardener on how to get rid, or at least keep they at bay? I have attached some pics.
Many thanks in advance of your help!
Laura

  • It could be Allium vineale or Allium triquetrum. They are rather hard to get rid of, but you can eat them...

If you let them flower , what do they look like? Allium moly seems to be in lots of job lots of bulbs to bulk them out. Nightmare to get rid of.

I have a similar problem in my front garden with muscari (grape hyacinths). All you can do is try not to let them flower or seed and keep taking the green tops off, anywhere you can't dig them out. If you have any areas you can mulch heavily to exclude light do that too. Eventually if they can't photosynthesise they will weaken & die but it's a long hard struggle - sorry.

  • Fidgetbones ive never actually seen them flower.  The green shoots just get taller and taller and travel further and further!

Allotment Boy, thank you for your advice.  I’ve spent the afternoon digging them out where I can.  They seem to grow in little clusters - very satisfying to dig out but then you turn around and there are hundreds more!! Hurumph.   Will try mulching with the compost I’ve been making.  Fingers crossed that light won’t get through!  Thanks and good luck with your muscari, it’s very pretty but a bit rampant ☺️
