Shrub identification needed......

Posts

  • Can anybody help with identification of this monster?  It needs cutting back drastically however no idea what it is.  A good 10ft high and 8ft wide it has lovely small flowers in summer which the bees absolutely love followed by small orange/red berries.  Any ideas?  can it be cut back hard, if so, when, how?

That appears to be an evergreen Euonymus, probably japonica? If yes, then I think you should be able to cut it hard back, as it's often used for hedging. If in doubt, cut back part and see if it regrows from the cut area before proceeding.
  • I have an App on my iPhone called Plantnet.  It's free!
Basically once you open the App you use the camera icon to take a photo of the unknown plant, tree or leaf. Select what you want to know.. selection is on your phone; press appropriately... you can retrace if you press in error.
The App then hunts through its' data and shows you the name of the plant, tree or leaf you photographed. Good luck!

IMHO the OP's reference to "  it has lovely small flowers in summer which the bees absolutely love followed by small orange/red berries. "  doesn't suggest Euonymus to me. I might be totally wrong.
    Devon.
  • ...it's not an arbutus, of that I am certain.  Euonymus japonica, having just looked it up, does seem a possibility though.....

Yes, Euonymous Japonicus, species, can get to 8m high. It should recover from a good prune, they are pretty tough. I have one growing through an invasive running bamboo hedge (both inherited). I’m constantly hacking bits off as I attempt and fail to control the bamboo.
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
  • ..if I'm going with the euonymus answer when would be the best time for a hard prune?
