Why not just go for the wall-eating evergreen clematis armandii you want and grow some nice shrub and floribunda roses in front, in large pots if necessary?
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
There's always thug roses such as Kiftsgate, Rambling Rector, Wedding Day which get huge but they do only flower once in June then have red hips in autumn.
Both roses and clematis are thirsty hungry plants so need their own planting holes, well prepared, and then annual feeding and mulching and watering thru hot or dry spells.
Personally, I love clematis in many forms but would never plant an armandii. Short flowering season and then boring foliage all year.
Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.
"The price good men (and women) pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men (and women)."
In such a situation, a couple of alternatives spring to mind.
Rosa banksiae 'Alba Plena' is an evergreen, nearly thornless rose. But it flowers only once, quite early in the season. There's also a yellow form, 'Lutea'. You could probably couple this with a later-flowering clematis; Clematis flammula is one that has a lovely scent.
Another option would be to go for two plants of Trachelospermum japonicum, which have white, sweetly scented flowers in May, and often later on too. They are evergreen, but not thuggish and you can prune them once a year to keep them tidy and in bounds.
I salute you for even thinking about gardening when 8 months pregnant!
