Newbie needing help?!

Please can anyone help me? We moved house last year and have a “proper” garden, actual soil and borders etc :) I’m thoroughly enjoying it gardening but I am very new, I think this is a montbretia but what is all this woody stuff in the middle? I tried to pull it out (it’s so tough) and it literally has taken over but I darent cut it back, don’t want to kill it...please can anyone advise...I would be so grateful. Thankyou

Not sure thats crocosmia maybe kniphofia, but it's dead stems and leaves.
If you can't get your secateurs down to cut it out, just leave it to decay and then they shouldwill pull out easily.

    Could it be a yucca?

Difficult to identify at that stage, could be all sorts of things. The brown stalks are from last year and can be pulled or cut out. If it is as tough as you suggest and you want to reduce it, it may be possible to dig out part from the outside edge, but if you wait till it does something, proper identification and advice will be possible.
  • Thankyou all for your comments, I’m going to try with the secateurs today. I did try to pull them with no luck. My mum seemed to think it was the montbretia but I’ll give it a little hair cut and some tlc and hope for the best, we’ll see what happens :)
