Lawn help needed

We took over a 200 metre square lawn which had been left for a few years, all the grass seems to have gone to seed so now it is very thin and long, hopefully as you can see in the picture. Almost no leaf on it. Can anyone help advise how I can return it to leaf? It's quite hard to mow as it is all intertwined and very flat. I've been taking it up with a spring time rack then mowing it to try to shorten it.

What sort of lawn are you aiming for?
Not sure you will get a nice lawn from that grass.
You might end up having to rake it out and level the dips and hollows and reseed.

  • Something nice for our three year old to play on, my thoughts was to kill off, turn over and reseed but someone told me to keep cutting it low and it'll rejuvenate

Your choice really what you are doing is fine, just reduce gradually ideally by a third to start with if you have a strimmer if not the highest your mower will go. Then cut weekly going lower each time.
As to a reasonable lawn it depends what sort of grass has taken over, most probably the toughest.
Its rather like weeds will always grow better than your plants!
Once you have it short but not scalped you can over seed using seed mixed in with fine sieved compost to help with the uneveness you are going to get.
Or start again with turf instead for a more instant lawn.
