Duck Weed

Does anyone have a successful remedy for getting rid of duck weed from a pond?
Many thanks

    Ducks?
    Sorry couldn't resist
  • If you google "duckweed control" there are lots of eco-friendly remedies available. We used one of these with total success but I'm afraid I can't remember exactly which one as it was several years ago. The duckweed never returned.

I use Nishikoi Clear Waters which is excellent for blanket weed. On the tub it also says it is effective against duck weed though that is something we don’t have a problem with - and that could be due to Clear Waters.

I used to have lots of it in both ponds, but now only get a tiny amount in my little pond.
When it used to be a problem, I'd use a jet from the hose to push it all to one end of the pond then net it out.

After a few years with no duckweed, I accidentally introduced some with some bits of a pond-weed from nearby lakes. I never had much, and the pond is small enough that I could remove any as sighted (this was hindered a bit when a leylandii conifer fell across the pond - it was a few months before I cut it up and removed it - duckweed was hiding underneath). I spotted just one or two duckweed plants (single leaves) over this winter, but it looks like I've essentially got rid of it.

I see that Nishikoi indeed mention duckweed as well in their product targeting blanketweed. At least blanketweed is an alga, but duckweed is a normal plant - difficult to imagine something affecting it without affecting other plants.

Thank you all for your help. We will investigate further.

I agree it seems unlikely but it worked a treat for us without apparently affecting either plants or pond creatures!

Agree with you both as to an algae against a flowering plant having a product that could work against both.
Again we have to give it a go and investigate and hopefully it will work.

Goldfish. I actually take it out of my wildlife pond to feed the goldfish in their pond.
