  • I'd say it's a partially decomposed aubergine from a compost heap.

    I was thinking maybe a fig ?
    1. First time one arrived outside back door in December, I cut it in half (using gloves and sharp knife)- it was meaty inside, like liver.

I've had apples end up looking like that. Is that the stalk visible in these later photos (from centre - white at its base, and heading left) - in the original photo too, but less obvious. I didn't get many apples last year, but just managed to find one down the garden - looks just like your things, and could find the pips inside.
  • Thank you for these great ideas! One  neighbor  has identified apple leaves from her garden; another suggested a pellet from sparrow hawk, as he has photos of one in this area.Disection is offered of most recent.
  • I'm very confident it's an apple - here's mine for comparison, with stalk, and some of the structure of the core visible in the hole on the right.
