Leggy tomato seedlings

Good evening gardeners.
I had a bit of a senior moment and forgot to check my tomato seeds yesterday which were being kept in the airing cupboard. Ive checked today and they've all sprouted and are now a leggy 6-7cm high. Have I lost them or can I recover the situation? Thanks
I could agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong...

  • Leggyness isn't a fatal condition, though might make more susceptible to rotting in the short term. Give as much light as possible, less heat, and then don't worry for a bit. It doesn't matter if they fall over - they'll bend upwards after going sideways. When it comes to potting on, you can bury some of the stem (tomatoes are happy to grow roots from buried stem), but you don't have to bury it, and I wouldn't mess about trying to do it at this stage - fiddling with them just likely to damage and kill them. If they survive to grow into proper tomatoes, that leggy bit of stem will end up being the usual tomato 'tree trunk'.

Have you got any seeds left to sow now? You might have peaked a little early.

They need light as much as heat.
If it were me, I would start again, but you must give them light.
How can you lie there and think of England

  • Fortunately I have a freebie packet from this months magazine  :)
I only meant to keep them in the airing cupboard until they had germinated  :# I've learnt my lesson....
