Waterlogged Buddleias

I planted Buddleias in September. They were doing marvelously until 2-3 weeks ago. This has been an extremely wet winter here in Portugal. It is 20 years since i have seen our land so sodden. Following a week-end of incessant rain they ended up completely flooded. We have dug drainage trenches to remove the surface water, but they are looking extremely droopy and sad. The bottom leaves on one of them appear to be recovering slightly, but the other shows no sign. Is there anything I can to do help them? Should I prune them back? Should I try and transplant them to a drier spot? Or should I just leave them and hope for the best?

I would be inclined to wait and see. I have heavy soil, waterlogged for much of the winter and do find buddleias short lived but they survive a relatively brief soaking. In England, we would be cutting them back in late winter or early spring, anyway, except for baby trees like yours, so you may be lucky. You could of course move them if you fear it happening every year and it is always worth taking cuttings if you have a particularly good specimen.

As Posy says they will survive a brief water logging but not for too long. I lost two a couple of years ago in my clay soil, I would take cuttings and try and improve the soil conditions if you can.
