Tall border plants

Year after year in places I have lived, I always encounter problems with tall plants such as Dahlia's drooping away from the wall or fence, they look for the sun, I have staked them, tied them with string and allsorts. What is the thing to do to keep them upright...????

    How we agree with you.
Our garden has all the plants that bend over/droop/grow too tall etc.
We have tried to keep the light on to the plants as much as possible and the wind breaks to slow down the wind.
We have learnt to live with the plants doing their thing in our garden and we still have some brilliant plants.

Oh yes, the yearning to get away from the wall! Some plants are more heliotropic than others - all the dahlias, heleniums, echinaceas, sunflowers etc., all reach for the sun. Some of the spire type or those with multi-flowered stems types seem more biddable, like tall agastache, verbena bonariensis, salvias.

Have a look at youtube for some videos on how to build a simple frame which has at least one though usually two layers of wide netting right across so the plants grow through.   Fine one called "How to Stake Dahlias" by Team Flower - it should come up as the second result if you type 'how to stake dahlias' into the search box :)
