Muddy lawn

Hi. Due to covid and school closure my three kids have completely battered my lawn. We love our garden and so there is no way we don’t want to restore the lawn. Is returfing the answer?  We’ve previously done the seed repair thing but I think it just leads to endless weeding issues😩. Do I just leave it to hopefully come back or shall we returf the really boggy muddy parts?  Thanks

Astroturf. Kids + a decent lawn is a no-no, especially as you seem to have drainage problems also. Look around, some are very natural. Let your plants grow over the side. No-one will know the difference. A good company will cut it to fit. They may advise also on how to improve the drainage. Good luck!

After a wet winter it's no surprise your lawn is muddy, especially if the kids have been playing on it and compacting the soil while it's damp.  No point re-seeding or laying new turf without fixing the drainage.

Have a read of this info from the RHS and follow the links

Once you start the aeration process to improve drainage you'll need to keep off it for a while to allow the lawn to drain and then be ready for the dressing with lawn sand etc.  Bit of a faff but worth it and you'll end up with a better lawn for not a lot money.
