No flower buds on last year's tulips

EustaceEustace Posts: 2,290
I had put away last year's pots in which I had planted the tulip bulbs after flowering. Now that I have retrieved them, I can see lots of shoots but no flower buds at all. Will the flower buds appear soon? Or am I being too eager? TIA.

Most tulips don't flower well the second year. Also they flower more when planted very deeply. A lot of people use them as annuals.

As for yours - are they early or late flowering? If they are the sort that flower in early May they may be hope for them yet.

  • I agree with Busy-Lizzie. Tulips are a bit finickity and quite often only show their flowers once.
If they don't flower this year, remove them from the pot and try planting them out, deeply, in November.
I make a good deep hole with a crowbar (as recommended by Monty Don) it goes deeper than a trowel or bulb planter.

Thanks for your replies. I'll wait until this season is over and plant them in the garden.
