Cat proof Houseplants

  • Thank you so much for all these thoughts. When she goes to work she's currently putting all her plants into 'witness protection' in her bathroom!
I will let her know about the cayenne, and to check out toxicity of succulents too.  She's tried cat grass but so far they just leave it- will suggest Swedish type. And hanging them (plants) of course!

Get the cats some toys and a plant they're allowed to chew.  Make other plants difficult to access.

I have 2 cats and houseplants in several rooms.   Except when they were small kittens and into everything I've had no problems with them bothering my house plants.

I've just totted up on my fingers and I've had 17 cats over the years,  though I might have missed one or two! 6 at once for a while and even now I've got 3. The last old lady died at 20.
Never had any issues with cats and plants, and I have a lot of those too, but they do all have access to outside. They don't seem to pay much attention to the grass, though the dogs like a nibble.

Mother-in-law's Tongue (Sansevieria) is the only houseplant I'm able to grow at present.  It's one of the few indoor plants not toxic to any animal, as far as I know (used to work in a garden centre so I researched this cos we were often asked for recommendations).  And, of course, the one green thing my cat doesn't chew is the sansevieria...  :)  ...and a hanging basket isn't necessarily out of reach, either.  Depends how determined the cat is, and how high it can jump.  It's nature, not nurture, I think; we had 2 sisters as indoor cats, one a plant-eater, the other not.  The plant-eater is still alive, even after consuming my privet cuttings a month ago...   >:)
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

Our grumpy old man-cat will chew on any house plant that has long "grassy" leaves, so dracaena, spider plants etc, if he can get to them. Most of the time I manage to keep them out of reach - he can't jump as high as he used to. He shows no interest at all in other houseplants. He does like his cat grass, but we have to ration it otherwise he swallows loads and then brings it up again 🤮

  • Many thanks for the many replies- I've just face timed her, and her plan of action is to experiment with a few types of cat grass, to see if there's one they like.  To put most plants in her bathroom, in a jungle type feature where they can't get in, and have succulents and high hanging pots elsewhere. So hopefully they'll all live happily ever after! 😻🌿😻
