Weed ID + grass help

Hi All!
I recently moved to a new property and need to tackle the garden. There are lots of weeds growing out the grass. Can anyone tell me what they are? I managed to pull the big ones out and the root was very thick and deep. There are still loads more to get.
The grass in the house has not been cut since June and must be half a metre longer, it's collapsed under its weight and a lot of white root from the grass exposed too. Should I rip the grass out and start again?

Thanks for your help

  • 'Dock' (Rumex sp.) for the weeds - probably? The dead stems at this time of year and large roots seems to agree with that.

Grass is amazingly good at getting going despite whatever you do to it,since it produces shoots from the base, and for the most part what gets mown off is just 'leaves' rather than the growing points. So up to you what you want to make of the grass - it'll turn into some kind of lawn if kept cut.

The 'docks', if that's what they are, will come up again as the weather warms up - they'll be discouraged if regularly mown off.

I would get a springbok rake and, when its dry enough, scarify as harshly as I dared. The lawn will regenerate with a regular mowing regime.
