How to solve a problem with Ceanothus

I've had this Ceanothus for years and all of a sudden it looks very unhealthy. It has shoots growing from the side but the main plant looks very dry. Any ideas of what to do?

I think ceanothus are classed as fairly short lived, if you get 10 years from them you're doing well.
It may be worth cutting back to the green shoots and seeing if it picks up again. I don't think they are plants that require feeding, but you may find more information here

Ceanothus is a Californian plant that grows best in a dryish, well-drained ericaceous (Lime-free) soil. They are easily frost-damaged. As your plant is relatively elderly ( which suggests soil alkalinity is not a problem) I would try taking a cutting in about a month's time, or else get a new plant, as it looks unlikely to flower this year.. Good luck!
Everyone likes butterflies. Nobody likes caterpillars.
  • Thank you both so much for your advise. Think I'll take cuttings from the shoots at the side and start again.  :)
