What is a 9cm pot?

B3B3 Posts: 27,505
Online retailers often  quote pot sizes in centimetres.
Is the 9cm the height or the diameter?

Usually the diameter at the top. They might come in different depths for the same diameter. As for whether it's the inside or outside diameter... (Thinks of judges at plant shows with their measuring device checking the exhibitors haven't committed the sin of using a larger pot than the show schedule indicated.)

Later edit: and for a square pot, it's usually the distance between opposite sides (not the diagonal). So you get more 'volume for your money' with a square one.

It’s the diameter. You might find this link helpful

The diameter if the pot is round, but I mostly get square 9cm pots. That means one side of the top is 9cm.

Thanks all. I've bookmarked the guide for future reference and noted how the rectangular dimensions work too.

I wish sellers would always follow the linear dimension with the volume which would give some idea of depth and how much compost is needed. Irked in the same way by lamp specs, lumens are way more useful than wattage  :s

Sorry @B3 probably should be on that 'other' thread, just feeling the isolation with it being Mothering Sunday and all.

I don't mind at all. Off piste is always interesting😊

Thank you, I think I may be more piste off though.

  • It's an indication of plant size but consider that the plant does not always fill the pot. It's also annoying that sometimes the choices are 9cm or 2 litre. Apple's and oranges 😂
  • I've have now consulted my "British Cactus and Succulent Society: Handbook of Shows, 10th edition, 2014", and it's the inside diameter at the top which matters for the purpose of their shows. Which is why judges need a set of 'calipers', as not much chance of getting a ruler across the pot when there's a large spiny cactus occupying most of it!

I read that the "11th edition" is just out - I'm out of date - I'm not much into shows, but if I want to enter, I'll need the new one (it's mainly about which plants they've decided are eligible in which classes - fortunately only a single paragraph on how pots are measured). :-)
