@aidanhoad -Resorted to iPad to upload pics (don’t know why they’re sideways...).
First pic is today, about a year from a very hard cut (taking about half it’s thickness out). As you can see, the top could do with a tidy again, even though it was trimmed about February time this year.
This particular hedge had been allowed to get extremely thick -about 5 feet in places. Would advise regular assessment and removal of the odd branch as required. Rapid growth is definitely not a problem for this hedge- if anything, quite the opposite! Birds do seem to like it.

A wee update - I committed to it and a few weeks back planted out 30!
Just wondered, do you think I should cut them across the tops to encourage side growth or am I getting ahead of myself?
As someone who is really awful at gardening, I am just overjoyed that it’s been a while now and they are still going strong!!
