Compost heap

What is the best way to add newspaper to a compost heap. Should it be torn, shredded, or screwed up before putting it on the heap?
Many thanks

It's best to shred paper before putting it on the heap and don't add too much at once.

I just put in single scunched pages, but it will all break down in time.

Does it have to be newspaper or can it be regular paper? Am thinking of the contents of my office paper shredder....

Any paper is fine these days. I put most household waste paper and cardboard in. I don't tend to use glossy printed papers (like fliers etc) because it takes longer to break down - but everything else, yes. A4 scrap, loo rolls, kitchen towel; plus cut up cotton, wool, linen, earbuds, cotton wool - basically any organic material without plastic bits on.

I mainly use brown cardboard such as toilet roll middles, coffee trays from take out coffee,  brown boxes  and newspaper which I tear up and roll into balls as that traps air in the heap.

All are made as small as possible

Good morning and thank you all. I will set about adding to the heap - when it stops raining!
