Is this couch grass?

Hi all

My research leads me to believe this is couch grass. If I'm right, should I be digging it out or can I hoe the surface?

The one on the left looks like a crocus leaf. You could dig down and see if there is a small bulb attached.

Thanks @Ceres, I had no crocus last year and haven't planted any so I don't think that's likely, is it?

I'd be inclined to dig them up, and if you find a bulb underneath (and want to keep it) you can pop it back in, no harm done. The one with the white stripe down the middle does look like a crocus.

they don't look like couch grass to me
  • I've had several crocus appear this year. Maybe they are seeds blown in which I didn't notice last year. I'd agree they look like crocus. What led you to couch grass?

Probably not couch grass, but if they are, they'll be joined together by a thick whitish and very brittle root. If they are individual seedlings, probably either a blow in bulb or another type of grass

    Thanks @JennyJ @Skandi @shane.farrell & @raisingirl.

I'll have a dig and report back. I assumed they were a weed, Shane, and of all the seedlings I could see online couch grass seemed to be the only one with thin green leaves. I did have one random crocus appear a couple of weeks ago, I assumed that was from we did over the garden and one got left behind, maybe there are more or as you've all suggested, they've blown in.

  • Free plants are always nice. Usually the best bet is learn the weedlings that appear regularly and this will help identify things that may be good plants. Then you can wait and see and eventually move to a more suitable spot. 👍

@shane.farrell yeah, absolutely. I'm trying to be a little brave and letting somethings grow if I'm not sure what they are, especially at I could do with as many free plants as possible!! The few weeds I do know (even if not by name) I whip out asap!!

  • It's funny how people sometimes think that you put a plant or one grows and it must stay put. I am always digging things up, splitting, planting (sometimes killing!!) plants and editing borders etc. Don't worry leave them, dig them up it's all gardening and should be fun 👍☺️
