Thats impresively neat clare.  Can you re-use those fabric liners then, or are they bio-degradable made like tea bags? I will have a go at some more pics later, I always knew smart phones were flaming complicated!!!
  • Hi, they are biodegradable but surprisingly strong, and easy to handle. With some seeds that i don’t want the root disturbed I just bury the whole thing  into a normal pot or the ground when they get to a good size. But when a seedling doesn’t make it or the whole plant comes out easily they can be reused. I have used those biodegradable cardboard type pots and they are a pain as when they are kept moist I find they just fall apart and everything gets everywhere.
The material pots are a bit fiddly to fill but once they are done they are so easy to look after and as you can see you an get loads of seedlings in one tray. Also I find that there is a bit if a gap between the soil surface and the top of the pot and I think this gives the delicate seeds a bit more protection. When I have filled a pot I make a large hole in the middle with a knitting needle and then drop the root way down.

Your boarder collie sounds lovely. My Scottie is a right handful. I managed to drop a whole tray of newly potted seeds all in my own last week without the help of the dog!
  • Fantastic pictures everyone, and admiration for growing them in the kitchen @didyw. I start mine off indoors on the windowsills. And pot them on and then move them into my greenhouse. I have got a couple of the plastic greenhouses that you just fold away when not in use. And last year as you can see in my pictures, they were great for the extra space I needed for my obsession of growing lots of plants. Happy sowing everyone.

That's quite a production line you had going on there @Jacqueline29!  Like how you've used the tin foil to reflect the light - good idea!

  • Lovely pics everyone. Here are mine, I've taken over the spare room windowsill as it has good light.  Like Jacqueline@29 I use tin foil/white paper reflectors, to stop the seedlings leaning to the light and getting leggy. The foil is more effective, so will be replacing the white paper backings as soon as I get more foil! In no particular order, tomatoes, chillis, dahlias, pelargoniums, dichondra, parsely, cosmos, loads of other seeds. Running seriously out of space again!

We're a month on - how is everyone doing with their seedlings?  I potted some more things on today and sowed another batch of things at the weekend.  This is the state of play at mine:
