Laurel leaves being eaten or is it disease

My laurel bushes have chunks taken out of the leaf edge and other parts of the leaf are black. What could be causing this? It appears to me to be more insect than disease but unsure. What can I do to stop it Many thanks

    Hello Sheila  :), it's difficult to tell without seeing a photo, but the damage could be caused by either slugs or vine weevils perhaps. 
    With regard to the blackened leaves, have a look at this, see if it's of any help.
