Container flowers for shady area

    Geraniums are hardy.  However, pelargoniums are not.   They have similar flower forms and seed heads to geraniums so were given the same name when they first arrived from South Africa.  Now we know they are genetically different and require, ususally, good sunlight and good drainage.

    There are forms of hardy geranium, native to Europe, which do well in shade - Kashmir White, Ann Folkard, phaeum........  
    Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.

    Maybe have a look at skimmias as well, they’re hardy. I really like the apple green ‘Finchy’ variety, which has lots of flowers. The flowering season is spring, but the buds provide interest through winter

    Fuchsias and begonias have essentially flowered in the dark for me - amazing plants.
