Ivy roots

I’m a novice gardener so would appreciate any advice you can share in relation to this issue.

I moved into a property with a brick planter against a brick wall, which I know has had no plants in for at least 5 years. Along the brick wall, there is evidence of (what I think is ) ivy which, given the traces on the brick work, looks like it used to climb up from the planter all over the wall.

When I went to to plant something new in the planter, I discovered this giant root which in places was 2-3 inches thick (see image).

Ive done my best to remove the majority of it but I know there are still some bits there deep down in the planter.

What I would like to know is, is this dead old root a problem for planting new things in the soil here? I would like to plant a rose and train it to climb the wall.

Thank you in advance.

We had to replace a fence absolutely covered in Ivy in 2019. Several mini trunks of Ivy at soil level couldn't be dug out. I was expecting problems but they were no where near as bad as I thought. The few shoots there were were easily pulled away. The trick is to keep on top of it.
