Strawberry Help Please :)

Hi all,
I have a new strawberry pot this year - my last one perished and crumbled, however it had flowers in it not strawberries. This year I want to actually get some strawberry plants and see how they get on. When is the best time to buy and plant? Is it too early??

TIA. Rebecca x

  • You could still get some bare roots otherwise small plants will be arriving in garden centres. Perfect time to plant them, mine have started actively growing after the sunny weather last week. They're fully hardy so no need to worry about any last frosts.

Strawberries are surprisingly tough.  So I would get them as soon as you can.  If by strawberry pot you mean one of those tall planters, I recommend you put a porous pipe down the centre to help get water evenly all the way down.

The only time to be worried about frost is when they are o flower. if it talks of frost I drape some fleece over them at night, because if they get frosted the flower will go black and not produce fruit.
  • Wonderful thank you all!! I will take a trip to the garden centre in the next couple of weeks and see what I can get! :)

Strawberries must be one of the hardiest and durable plants around because they've survived during years of complete neglect in my garden :D

What's more it won't be long until you multiply them several times over and have as many as you want.

I went to the garden centre last weekend and I am sure that they had strawberry plants on sale.

When they are in flower, I give them a feed with tomato feed about once a week.
