Garden flooded out of the blue

Hi, I am after a bit of advice please. We have lived in our house for 4 years and today our garden has flooded for the first time ever, quite badly I think. We have a patch that runs around the lower part, and behind that pebbles. The path was re-grouted with patio filler and the pebbles were put down last year also so both of these are new to the area, am wondering if these two things could of caused this flooding? It’s very odd as this has never happened before??

Hello Tricia, sorry to hear  that your garden has been flooded. May  I ask whereabouts are you and has it rained in your area lately?
It may be more of a  blocked drain or sewage issue. Does the area smell  bad?

You are asking us to help with without seeing the area and with not much information so it's very difficult to comment.
Why do you only think it's quite badly? Is the water ankle deep or up to your knees?
Is the grout you used porous?
    What's under the pebbles?
    What was there before?
How quickly does the water drain away?
How long does it rain for before it floods?
If you can supply this information and some photos I'm sure someone comment.

  • Sorry I thought I had uploaded a picture of it.
Yes it has put a lot of rain down over the past 24 hours. But that isn’t unusual for this area living in the north or the country in Lancashire. We have been here for 4 years and never had it flood even slightly?
  • The grout that was used was actually for a patio, so do not believe it is porous. The water is not showing any sign of draining away right now, it’s just seems to be growing.
This is the first time we have had it flood so don’t know about how long it will take to drain away I am afraid
  • The Path has always been there, my father in law just re-grouted it in July this year. Before the pebbles, there was a flower bed, with plants. My father in law says he used a porous lining before putting the pebbles down.

    Curious, sudden events.
I think it unlikely that there will be pipe in that location that may have sprung a leak,
does the water appear to be moving that might indicate a flow or is it static?
Have your neighbours done any building or landscaping works lately?

Just another day at the plant...
  • The water doesn’t seem to be moving it’s just sitting.
One side has had an exstention the other had their lawn re-laid and a shed, foundation re-laid

You really need to check that this isn't a leak from a pipe. This can bump up your water bill considerably and needs to be mended ASAP if it is a leak. We had one in a previous property and no-one knew about it until the water reached the neighbours floorboards so this sort of thing can cause a lot of damage if it isn't dealt with. Best to look online at your water supplier's website to see what you need to do. Of course, the leak could be coming from a neighbour's property.
  • Thank you I will give the water board a call
