Thanks for the advice....we’re now looking at Lonicera glabrata as a candidate, it has bronze/deep purple new foliage maturing to green to add a bit of interest to the garden
I forgot to include tracleospermum jasminoides, a twining evergreen with white sweetly scented star like flowers in the summer. There are some with cream coloured flowers which are not so strongly scented. All evergreen plants lose their leaves at some time to make room for the new growth to break through. Trachelospermum leaves turn bright scarlet during the winter months and gradually drop over the Spring months as the new flowering shoots develop.
