Advice needed - How to grow some Grass

Hi All,

So basically what the title says, I want some grass in these areas below and I'm not sure how to go about it. History on this is there used to be a run of leylandi hedging (whole other story) and they were all cut down to the stumps. I was planning on planting a new hedge but now plan to leave it and keep it open for a while until we decide later. The ground is quite weedy (some roots of ivy in parts) and I'm thinking stumps will obviously cause an issue but if the majority was covered until just shy of the fence id be happy.

My main question is am I better laying plastic over the area for 6months to kill the weeds and start fresh (will that even happen?) or what is the best method as it cant be just as simple as throwing grass seed down, or can it?

Bonus picture 3 of another area which is damper soil with clumps of grass near an exposed slate rock hill, I'm thinking dig this up, add new soil and plant grass or how would I fix that?

Many thanks in advance,

A not so expert gardener..

When you say 'grow grass' are you talking about turf or ornamental grasses. You could re turf both the areas pictured. Close mowing turf will get rid of many of your weeds. A stump grinder would solve the problem of the stumps.

If you've had leylandii growing there, you will struggle to get any grass growing without first improving the soil. I think your best bet is to dig out all the weeds and add some soil improver. Then turf.
