Rhododendron never bloomed

Hi
We moved it to our house 4.5 years ago and there is a healthy looking rhododendron in the garden. It has never flowered or even had a bud. Its quite large, in partial sunny spot and has small leaves. The pigeons sometimes get into it but I have netted it last two years but still no buds. I am wondered whether I need to prune it back hard.
Any ideas are very welcome.
Thank you
Donna

  • Hello. Can you post a photo? I would say it is unusual for a rhodo not to bud up in all that time yet look healthy. Not getting enough water in the summer can affect its ability to produce buds for the following spring's display but I still think a considerable amount of time has passed for this to have happened every year.

I have just taken a couple of photos (below). When i look closely there are tiny little flowers (i think) which I have not looked at that closely before. Could these be the be the blooms I have been waiting for all this time? I would not have thought they would be this tiny and of this colour
    Thank you

Definitely look like blooms to me. Perhaps indeed not the most exciting ones when one thinks of rhododendrons.

Could that be a spurge laurel (daphne laureola)?
