Vegetables in wall mounted basket/trough?

ErgatesErgates Posts: 2,953
I have a couple of wrought iron style trough things, like a hanging basket but long and designed to hang on a wall. Like a window box shape? In the past, I’ve put in a liner and planted up with flowering plants.
We are very short on sunny spots in the garden for things like tomatoes or peppers, so I was wondering whether I could put a grow bag in each one and hang them on a south facing wall. They would be just outside the kitchen door, so easy to keep watered.
would this be likely to work well? I’m thinking cherry tomatoes, a few peppers or even strawberries?

Depends on how big they are but I've definitely seen strawberries in them. In fact I'm thinking about getting some for strawberries myself this year.

The types of tomatoes that are designed for baskets would work. Some examples here https://www.simplyseed.co.uk/tomatoes-for-hanging-baskets-and-tubs.html (other sellers are available). The cordon types might be difficult to support properly.

Yes, you can. Just choose varieties according to its size - small hanging basket tomatoes, dwarf chillies, etc.
The smallest tomato I've grown is Red Robin - happy in a 2l pot, perfect for window boxes. Smaller tumbling/hanging basket tomatoes are good too.
There are many options for small chillies, many of them are really decorative.
You can also add herbs (basil) or companion flowers (marigolds to prevent aphids).
Another option is growing salad vegetable - slugs won't find it there.

Some great suggestions, thanks. Hadn’t thought of adding some herbs or flowers, that would look nice. I’ll get some grow bags on my next shopping list.

I always grow Tumbling Tom tomatoes in a hanging basket with some basil.

Slugs will find anything anywhere, I have hanging baskets on metal brackets, on wooden rough spikey arches etc, they even get up there, I suspect the fly!!

Not just slugs, I suspect the squirrels will climb up to sample things as well. I’ll give it a try though.
