Is this how acer should grow

i have an acer palmatum dissectum in container, 7 years old in part shade, the branches fall over container like an umbrella, it has to be elevated to keep the branches from dragging on the ground. Lynne

It's described here https://www.ornamental-trees.co.uk/acer-palmatum-dissectum-tree-p625 as 'mound forming' so it sounds as if it's behaving exactly as it should.  :)

They can be pruned.  We have a mature disectum Acer, and we prune off the lower branches in Winter, as otherwise it touches our patio.  It is too late to do this now, if our Acers are anything to go by, the leaf buds are already starting to open.
