'Brown rot' can be caused by one of two fungi.  Monilinia laxa, which affects the blossom on pears and stone fruit trees (a sub-variant of M.laxa is limited to infecting only the blossom of apples) and Monilinia fructigena, which is the one which rots the fruit and can infect most fruit trees.

If you have Brown Rot on the fruit of a tree, make sure to remove infected fruit as soon as seen and all fruit at the end of the season (some of it gets 'mummified' and sticks to the twigs.)  Clearing up all fallen leaves and fruit at the end of the season, then mulching the ground beneath the tree with a couple of inches of home-made compost or similar will help reduce issues the following year.
