I also grow dahlias in pots. I have a question.
If the tubers are still fitting the pot, do I need to divide?

  • Oh I don't know as I'm new to dahlia growing, but I would expect so, do they get stressed like house plants? Hope someone answers you.

Hello newbie. Dahlias are greedy thirsty plants. If the tubers really fill the pots they'll have depleted any nutrient in the compost and they'll need watering very regularly, if they dry out in summer they're just about impossible to re wet. Splitting will give you more plants for you or to pass on and it will rejuvenate your plants.

It's good have enough medium in the pot to support the plant, enough room for the tuber to continue to grow and space for roots and water. If it feels squashed it's likely to perform less well.

Thank you. I am going to change all the compost anyway so will divide the ones which are too big for their pots.
