Leggy Dianthus

edited March 2021 in Problem solving
I have a Dianthus in a pot (pinks?) It's got green growth at the end of each stem and a lot of old, dry leaves and woody stems below. Should I cut it back to the base to get rid of the old woody growth or just leave it alone?

  • This is how they grow.  When they are very bare at the base I take cuttings (or pipings) by pulling out a green shoot and rooting in gritty soil then replacing the plant.  They do not respond well to being cut back in my experience, and in any case I would wait a while to give it a chance to green up properly.  Depending on where you are growing them (and it is not feasible in a pot) you can also layer them by covering a creeping stam in grit and pegging it down to root.
